The Ultimate Extreme Memory Card Game

The Memory Game has long been a favorite game for all generations. It is easy to play, in fact it is so simple that really young children can play with ease. It requires observation, concentration and a good memory to win.

With Memory Ninja we take good memory to a way new level…. The Ninja Level!!! Although incredibly easy to play, this game will require extreme concentration and focus. It will take 2 minutes to learn and a lifetime to master.

Be prepared to take up the challenge with your friends and family to find out who is the ultimate “Memory Ninja”.

Object of the game

The object of the game is to collect the most matching pairs.

What you will need to play

  1. A deck of memory cards – Buy from Amazon

  2. Two or more players.
  3. A playing surface large enough to lay out all the cards.
  4. Enough seating for players.

Setting Up the Game

  1. Shuffle the cards.
  2. Lay out the cards face down in rows forming a large rectangle on the table or floor. The first layer is set out in a 6 rows x 4 columns pattern as shown in numbers 1 through 24 in the diagram below.

  3. Next, place cards 25 and 26 in the middle 2 rows as the 7th column.

  4. Repeat the process placing a second card on top of each of the cards already placed making a pair of cards in each of the 26 positions.

Note: Make sure the cards are not touching each other. They need to be able to be flipped over without disturbing any cards around them.

Playing Memory Ninja

Decide who will go first. TIP: Typically it is the youngest player that goes first.

  1. The player chooses their first card and carefully turns it over. (Be sure not to disrupt the surrounding cards)
  2. The player then selects another card and turns it over.
  3. If the two cards are a matching pair then they take the two cards and start a player stack. The player is awarded another turn for making a match and goes again.

  4. If the cards are not a match they are turned back over and placed at the bottom of the pile (if there are 2 cards)and it is now the next players turn. If there is only 1 card then the card is simply turned over.

  5. The next player chooses their first card and turns it over. If it is a match for one of the cards the previous player turned over, and that card is back at the top of the 2 card pile, then they try to remember where that matching card was and turn it. If they are successful at making a match they place the cards in their stack and choose another card.
  6. If the first card turned over was not a match for one previously turned over the player selects another card in an attempt of making a pair.
  7. If they are unsuccessful in making a match they are turned back over and placed at the bottom of the pile (if there are 2 cards)and it is now the next players turn. If there is only 1 card then the card is simply turned over. The turn then passes on to the next player.
  8. A players turn is not over until they are unable to make a matching pair.
  9. The game continues in this fashion until all the cards are played or there is a remaining stack of cards where the matching cards are on top of each other. If there are matching cards happen to be one on top of the other then that pile (or piles) is considered “dead” and are not counted towards any players pile and the game is ended.

Winning the game

Once all the cards have been played the player with the most matching pairs, in their Player Stack, is the winner.

Special Cards

Ninja Swap Card

After making a match of this card the player is allowed to swap any 2 cards before taking their next turn. No player may observe the move. The swap is a “Ninja Stealth Move”.

E.g. The board currently looks like the below diagram (Stacks 7 and 2 have been found and Ninja Swap was one of the pairs found.

A player can choose to swap the top card in stack 25 with the bottom card of stack 19.

Only for ease of understanding let’s pretend that the cards are facing up. Moving the Bottom card from stack 19 (the red card) to the top of stack 25 and moving the top card of stack 25 (the blue card) to the bottom of stack 19. This is what we want to do…

Note: The player making the swap MAY NOT LOOK AT THE CARDS when swapping them out. They have to rely on their keen Ninja Sense of memory to remember which card is where so that they may benefit from the move.

TIP: A variation of the game could be to allow everybody to see the move so be careful about being too obvious with cards that are well known where they are…

Ninja Peak Card

After making a match of this card the player is allowed to take a private peak at any card before taking their next turn. Only the player that made the match can take a “Ninja Peak” at the card of their choice.

Tip

Just because it is another players turn definitely doesn’t mean you should stop paying attention. The cards that other players flip over could be the match you’re looking for and you also need to remember the order in the stack of 2 cards that the match is made.

If you have identified a match, keep track of where they are in the stack and work your way around to bringing both of the cards to the top of their respective stacks. The key is to do it subtly so that your opponent doesn’t notice what you are doing…
